Cut nails are machine-forged nails with a tapered shank and a round head. The tapered shank allows the nail to be removed without splitting the wood. After straightening the nail, it can be reused – unlike modern nails. Cut nails began to be manufactured in the latter half of the 19th century and gradually replaced hand-forged nails. The nails are cut from thick steel plate, hence the name. Generally, the nails can be divided into the following application categories.
