Cold-pressed linseed oil is extracted from flaxseed by pressing when the flaxseed is cold. This ancient method yields the highest and purest quality of linseed oil.
When boiled and mixed with pigments, cold-pressed linseed oil becomes the best linseed oil paint. Boiling frees the linseed oil from contaminants that would otherwise cause the paint to be attacked by fungi and algae outdoors. The simplest linseed oil on the market is pressed at high temperatures or extracted with chemicals. This extracts larger quantities of linseed oil from the seed, but in return, it is of lower quality. Such linseed oil became common from the 1950s, when industry took over paint production that painters previously handled themselves on-site.
Gysinge's linseed oil is of the highest quality, produced in an unbroken tradition at the same factory since 1839.
