Linseed oil paint Green Umber 7% is a pre-mixed, light warm grey linseed oil paint with green umber mixed with white. This color was common from the 1800s to the mid-1900s, as a lighter grey in the scale towards lighter shades on woodwork details. NOTE! The color reproduction on the screen does not 100% match reality.
When painting corners and trim on wooden houses from the 18th to the 20th century, it is useful to know that the degree of tinting of white paint varied across different eras. Most common in the 18th century was 30% green umber, which gives a distinct limestone grey shade. During the 19th century, the fashion lightened, and the "white" paint often settled around 15% green umber. By the turn of the 20th century, however, a light, soft white was highly fashionable, corresponding to 2% green umber.
Gysinge's linseed oil paint is manufactured in our own factory from boiled cold-pressed linseed oil and pigment, without the addition of solvents.
The paint is semi-matte and suitable for painting both indoors and outdoors on wood, sheet metal, and iron. It adheres well to both new surfaces and old previously painted surfaces, and works in both dry and humid environments. When newly painted, the paint is glossy but will mattify to semi-matte after a few weeks, depending on weather and substrate.
Outdoors, the surface primarily mattifies in south-facing locations where UV radiation breaks down the linseed oil, which can cause the color to lighten somewhat, especially with dark shades.
Repainting is only needed after 8–15 years, depending on exposure. Linseed oil paint works equally well on new and old surfaces, and the patina that develops gives a natural and beautiful character.
