Wallpaper Farstun, grey is a light grey wallpaper featuring a stencil pattern in red, blue and white, dating from the first half of the 19th century. The pattern is typical of the stencil wallpapers of Hälsingland. In Sweden, this period is known as the Karl Johan era and is characterised by a preference for restrained colours and patterns imitating silk fabrics.

Very few people could afford genuine silk wallpaper, and most had to make do with imitations, usually stencil-painted patterns in distemper paint on rag paper. The middle classes, including clergy and merchants, could not afford costly silk damask either, and instead turned to local painters who became skilled at imitating textile patterns using stencils and silk-like colours. Farmers also adopted the fashion, but translated the patterns into the clear, vivid colours of traditional Swedish folk interiors.

This wallpaper was found in several farmhouses around Järvsö, where the combination of blue, white and red is the most common and characteristic colour scheme of the farming tradition. The more muted colours, on the other hand, are more typical of the Karl Johan era and the first half of the 19th century.

Stencil wallpapers were almost always combined with a solid-colour dado reaching up to window height, made of wood or grey rag paper. This gave the rooms a calm and harmonious sense of proportion, even when the wallpaper patterns were lively and colourful.
